Bushman Drum Construction

- Water is gathered from a small stream that runs near the Bushman Drums
shop. The water is used to soak and steam the ash used in constructing
the conga drums.
- Boards used in constructing the drum shell are meticulously selected
and positioned with great attention to grain pattern and coloration.
When placed together, the finished shell will take on a solid, uninterrupted
appearance. Once selected, boards will remain in their assigned positions
throughout the rest of the construction process.
- Once soaked and selected, boards are steamed and then placed immediately
into a press where they will be bent and formed to exacting design
contours.
- After contouring is complete, boards are cut and edged at precise angles
to be joined together to form the shell.
- Biscuit cuts are made in each stave and biscuits (small wafer shaped
pieces of wood), are then introduced to these cuts during the gluing
process to provide additional strength to the joined staves.
- Shell is placed on the lathe to be tooled and hand sanded to a buttery
smooth finish
- A cut is made to exacting dimensions at the bottom of the drum. A hand
forged metal ring will be inlaid in this cut to provide absolute strength
to the joined components.
- The hand forged metal ring is fitted to the inlay cut.
- The top edge of the drum is first rounded mechanically with a router
and then hand finished with special attention directed to provoding a
uniform and comfortable playing edge.
- Following finishing of the shell with polyurethane to protect both
the inside and out against moisture variants, hand forged metal is mounted
to the exterior and the drum head is soaked and hand tucked.
- After the head is completely dried it is tightened and the drum is
tuned.
- The rich sounds of a set of congas finely tuned to 1/4 intervals. The
craftsman demonstrates and enjoys the rich tonal qualities of his drums
in a short but sweet jam session.
- The BUSHMAN DRUMS seal....your seal of guaranteed quality and satisfaction
for the life of the drum.
